As a citizen of Colorado, I am so happy that our community, in cooperation with the local government, has organized the 2018 Mental Wellness Summit. It is all about talking and understanding that there are people in Colorado, the United States, and all over the planet who are living with behavioral conditions. What are these mental health issues? It includes ADHD, ODD, ASD, AD, depression, BD, LD, and CD. Yes, that is a lot of D’s, and I will try to talk about it.
ADHD is Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This is when a child is too hyperactive, inattentive, lack focus, or only focuses on one thing that he or she is particularly interested in, and displays some or all developmental delays. ODD is Oppositional Defiant Disorder. The child is often hostile and defiant to adults or people of authority. He or she will be disobedient.
ASD is Autism Spectrum Disorder, which can be categorized as low functioning or high functioning. There are many sub-categories under this disorder, which may include ADHD, Autistic Disorder (they cannot function properly since their brain is not developing typically), and Asperger’s. Usually, those kids with Asperger’s are put to therapy so they can cope with the symptoms of their disorder. But it will never be a cure. They will forever have their disorder. They will just learn how to curb it when necessary and live with it.
AD is Anxiety Disorder, and it has many types like Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, and Phobia. Depression is divided into mild, moderate, and severe. Those with moderate and severe depression need to go to therapy. Same with those who are living with anxiety disorders. BD is Bipolar Disorder, the two extremes – mania and depression.
LD is Learning Disorder, usually for kids with Dyslexia and Dysgraphia. These kids are often with above-average intelligence. They just have some issues with processing information in their brain since it is a neurological disorder. Some experts put ADHD in this category, as well. Lastly, CD is Conduct Disorder. It is when children act in a delinquent way, repetitively.
It was said in the summit that one out of seven people in Colorado do not get the treatment that they need for their mental health in 2018 alone. I am pretty sure that more do not get help at all, and this is why the summit was held. The community and the local government, including some private citizens, are worried about how people will be when their mental health is impaired. It was so refreshing to see that at the event, behavioral disorders mentioned above were addressed and that on-site assistance was offered.
